How to play Sudoku
Sudoku is a number game that has attained the status of being one of the most popular puzzle games in the US today. It does not involve mathematics, but it does require the use of your brain. Sudoku has nothing to do with knowledge, but it has every thing to do with reasoning and logical thinking. So, awaken your gray cells and get ready to play Sudoku…
The Layout of Sudoku
Sudoku puzzles consist of a 9×9 grid. This grid is further divided into 3×3 sub grids bordered with bold lines. They are also called subgrids or blocks or, at times, regions. There are a total of 81 cells. Some of these cells already have numbers in them (the ‘givens’), while the remaining cells are blank.
Rules of Sudoku
Start the game by filling the cells with the numbers from 1 - 9. Use logic to decide the appropriate number for cell. You should fill up the cells in such a way that:
- Every row must exhibit ALL the digits from 1 to 9.
- Every column must exhibit ALL the digits from 1 to 9.
- Every 3×3 block or region must exhibit ALL the digits from 1 to 9.
The ultimate objective of the puzzle is to have one of the numbers 1 to 9 in each cell, but with each appearing only ONCE in each row, column, and block. And you have to complete the game as fast as possible.
Simple Rules, Complex Game
The rules of Sudoku are quite simple and that is its main attraction. Games with lengthy and complicated rules repel the common crowd. However, simple rules do not indicate a simple game. Initially, you may feel its easy, but as you proceed, you will realize how complex Sudoku is!
Your mind will get interlocked in a world of digits. You will lose awareness of place of time and get captivated with this amazing puzzle of numbers. Once you start playing Sudoku, you will fall in love with it! You will become a Sudoku-addict in no time.
And this is just the beginning. There are many other varieties of Sudoku available. Some of them use symbols or letters, instead of numbers, while others use more than 9 digits. Such puzzles are highly complicated and cannot be solved by just anyone. However, as you go on playing Sudoku, your mind becomes sharper for more complex puzzles. But for most people, the classic 9×9 grid Sudoku puzzle is still the best.
